Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram on Thursday denied reports about him joining the Indian cricket squad as a bowling coach during India's forthcoming tour Down Under and termed it as a "misunderstanding"."No Indian player or any cricket board official had approached me with such offer. I am not involved in any controversy and it was just a big misunderstanding," Akram told reporters on the sidelines of Scorpio Speedster talent hunt for India's fastest bowler function in Mumbai. Asked about the reaction of the public back home (in Pakistan), Akram said "the reaction of the public back home is all the more painful as nobody has made any such offer to me leave alone me accepting the offer". "If I had accepted any offer then my people back home would have had the right to criticise me but when there has been no offer whatsoever then it hurts to see people still criticising me," he said. Akram, who rates former West Indies skipper Vivian Richards as the best batsman he had ever bowled to, said former Indian skipper Kapil Dev was his idol. "I also rate Sachin Tendulkar, West Indies captain Brian Lara and Australian Test skipper Steve Waugh very highly", he said. Akram, who has got a contract with ESPN TV channel for the next one-and-a-half year, said he is totally concentrating on television commentary and his old friend Ravi Shastri and others were very helpful in guiding him in his new role. Akram also said he gives tips to bowlers including Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra when they contact him as he is an international cricketer and would like to give back something to the game by sharing tips with upcoming cricketers. |
